U.S. bridge designers to visit New Zealand
PA Wellington Sixteen prominent American bridge designers and researchers will visit New Zealand from December 6 to 19 to develop a joint United States-New Zealand research programme on the design of earthquake-resistant bridges, the National Roads Board has announced. The group will be led by a former New Zealander, Dr R. L. Mayes, a former lecturer at the University of Auckland, and now executive
director of the Applied Technology Council in California, which has been responsible for arranging the visit. Dr Mayes, who is experienced in the fields of structural engineering and earthquake engineering, also serves as director of the A.T.C.’s project to develop nationally applicable seismic design provisions for highway bridges. The visit emanated from a workshop on sesmic resistance on highway bridges
held at San Diego by the A.T.C. two years ago in which New Zealand took part. The Americans, during their two week visit, will examine research in New Zealand and will see examples of New Zealand bridge design and construction practice. They will have talks with their New Zealand counterparts about establishing research needs and the format for a co-operative research programme.
