U.S. forces merged
The United States Defence Secretary (Mr Caspar W'einberger) has announced that two small Navy commands in the Caribbean would be merged into a main new command designated U.S. Forces Caribbean. Defence officials said the new force, to be formed next month, would be better able to cope with crises in the region, but they denied that its creation was triggered by any recent developments in Nicaragua or elsewhere. A Presidential adviser, Edwin Meese, has cited an increasing flow into Nicaragua of communist arms destined for Leftist guerrillas in El Salvador and said a United States naval blockade was a possible matter for discussion. — Washington.
