N.Z. Hosing two nurses to one’

PA Wellington Two nurses have left New Zealand for every one entering the country to work in the last three years, accord-

ing to the Nurses’ Society. The society’s national director, Mr David Wills, said that most of the New Zealand nurses had left the country to work in Britain, Australia, and North America.

Going by registration figures, 1059 nurses had left New Zealand last year and 459 had entered the country. It was significant that the New Zealand nurses were travelling to developed nations and not to resourcestarved areas. This migration loss carried widespread implications and costs for New Zealand’s health service.

Some loss was acceptable and even desirable but high imbalances and high losses could not be afforded. The present trend could be counteracted by improved working conditions and a more professionally satisfying work environment.

Migration figures had not been collated for the period since recruitment campaigns had been started by Middle Eastern health services but interest in posts in Arabian

Gulf States appeared to be fairly high. The Nurses’ Society is the smaller of the two nurses’ unions in New Zealand.
