Coe wins his third poll

NZPA London The world-record runner, Sebastian Coe, was yesterday named Britain's “Sportsman of the Year” for the third time in succession in the annual poll of the British Sports Writers' Association. An ice dancer, Jayne Torvill, won the women’s award. Miss Torvill and her partner. Christopher Dean, who won the World and European ice dancing championships earlier in the year and retained their British title at

the week-end, were also voted the “Team of the Year” in British sport, rele- . gating the Ashes-winning England cricket team to second place and the European soccer champion Liverpool, to third. Coe, who improved his world records in the 800 metres and mile, repeated his poll wins of 1979 and 1980 by a solid margin. He collected 234 votes, with the England cricketer. lan Botham. second on 184.
