Hurunui wins by one wicket

Hurunui and Malvern had wins against last season’s winner, Ellesmere, and runner-up Banks Peninsula, in first round matches in the Norman Allen Trophy under-23 representative cricket series on Sunday. After a disastrous first innings, Hurunui played steadily in its second innings to win by a wicket. Hurunui was bundled out for a. mere 56 in reply to Ellesmere's first innings of 118. with C. Johnson and C. Hamilton destroying the Hurunui innings. Ellesmere confidently declared its second innings at 52 for two, but the lead of 114 was not enough to withstand a Hurunui second innings revival led by Htigh Wright with 59. was an important factor in the Malvern success against Peninsula. Using medium pace off-spin he claimed match figures of nine for 33. Good bowling support was given bj’ Wayne Pluck and Peter Kininmonth. The Malvern batting dominated the Peninsula bowling so effectively that Malvern passed the Peninsula totals for the loss of only one wicket in each innings. Ashley had a bye.
