N.Z. hockey team given $20,000

‘ A grant of $20,000 from the national sports lottery fund has been made to the New Zealand hockey team, which will leave in about two weeks for the fifth World Cup in Bombay. ( The grant was announced by the Under-Secretary of Recreation and Sport, Mr Comber, at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Hockey Association in Wellington at the week-end. BThe team has a three-week bpild-up tour in Australia, Malaysia, and Pakistan before’ the tournament starts on December 29. about a third of the cost of the tour is covered by the’ ■ grant. The meeting agreed to pursue a national appeal, which has been already launched, to raise $150,000 to finance New Zea-

land’s international programme up to the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. The handsome trophy won by the New Zealand junior team when it won the Australasian zone qualifying tournament for the junior World Cup in Hong Kong in October was passed round the delegates at the meeting. They showed their support for the appeal by putting a total of $825 in the trophy.. Additional finance for tours will be provided from an increase in the tours levy. Previously the levy was $3O a graded team. From next season the levy will be $5O a graded. team. That. should provide an extra $7500 a season. Mr M. R. Good, of Christchurch, was elected president of the association.

The vice-presidents are Messrs R. Jones of Auckland, and D. L. Coulter, of Canterbury. The management committee elected at the meeting was Messrs R. H. Campbell, J. R. Gillespie, R. Ghanda, A. G. McAlister, B. R. Penfold, L. Taylor, T. C. Thomas, and L. Thompson. Mr Coulter, as a vice-president, still remains eligible to chair the management committee. The chairman will be elected at the committee’s next meeting. Regional delegates to the management committee:— Northern: Messrs C. Christie (Northland) and K. Bird (Counties). Central: Messrs B. Bremner (Wellington) and one to be appointed. Southern: Messrs D. Tilley (Canterbury) and B. Robertson (Otago).
