Chch W.M.C. gets on to points table

The fourth round of the Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association's senior-A competition began on Saturday in cold, blustery conditions that made it unpleasant for players. Christchurch W’M.C. has at last made it on to the points table. Its effort on Saturday was splendid. After being dis'mised for 101, it took great delight in seeing Southern Districts back in the pavilion for only 68 runs in its first innings. This was attributable in the main to the bowling of Ron Provan. who finished with seven wickets for 25 runs. At stumps. Christchurch W.M.C. was 12 for one in its second innings, thus giving it an over-all lead of 45 runs, with nine wickets in hand.

One of the highest scores in senior A cricket for some time was posted by Hoon Hay against Merivale-Papanui when it reached 296 for the loss of nine wickets. Hoon Hay batted all afternoon and scored the runs off 94 overs after being put in by Merivale-Papanui. The wicket was fairly docile, with nothing much in it for the' bowlers. Hoon Hay's effort was a team one. with five batsmen bettering the 20 mark. The Meri-vale-Papanui bowlers toiled away and Merv Willis finished with three wickets for 47.

When stumps were drawn at Barnett Park, Woolston W.M.C. found itself in a favourable positon. only 16 runs behind Sumner, with four wickets in hand. For Sumner, Roger Campbell and Owen Southen again provided badly needed runs. Bowling for Woolston W.M.C.. Norm Sloan and Ken Taylor headed the wicket-takers ’ with four and three respectively. In reply. Woolston W.M.C. was given a good start by Bob Kerr and Norm Sloan. ’ Tony McKendry and Don Braid shared the wickets. with three apiece.

Harewood continued its patchy form when it batted against Upper Riccarton. being all out for a meagre 81. Before this, Upper Riccarton had scored a good 193 for five before declaring. Alan Kerr again batted well for 53 as did J. Lindsay and Dave Kennedy in their efforts at the crease. In its second innings. Upper Riccarton at stumps was 12 for one.
