Lyttelton-Wellington ferry

Sir,-Mr Kidd, M.P. for Marlborough, criticised as “crazy” Labour's proposal for a Lyttelton-Wellington ferry. It is time he knew the reality of the present crazy situation. The following facts were given to me by a woman travelling from Sumner to Plimmerton to visit her sick father, using the Aranui. Three soundly sleeping children, aged 7, 5 and 4, were dragged from bed at 5.15 a.m. to catch the 7.10 a.m. train from Christchurch to Picton for the 2.20 p.m. ferry, arriving in Wellington at 5.40 p.m., thence to Plimmerton. A crazy 12-hour plus day. The one-way fare was $41.50. The alternative, using, Air New Zealand, was $lBO. Many similar families will find it hard to join distant relatives this Christmas under the same transport arrangements, especially those living south of Christchurch and north of Wellington. The air fare for one adult and three children; Invercargill to Auckland, is $B9O return. Mr Kidd's Government could well adopt Labour’s not so crazy proposal and use the Shipping Corporation expertise to run a profitable overnight service between our islands.—Yours, etc., GLADYS TRAVERS. Blenheim, November 19, 1981.
