Unemployment
Sir,—l am amazed, and not a little appalled, by the claim of your correspondent, Emily Harrison (November 19) that the staff of interviewers at the Labour Department are unfriendly and abrupt and that a long wait was necessary before an unemployed person could receive attention. Only yesterday I registered as unemployed, and the young lady who received and vetted my application was most courteous and helpful. I saw no evidence of long queues; there were only two persons ahead of me and three after me. The woman who interviewed me was also most helpful and courtious and gave me some excellent advice and' counselling. The correspondent’s remarks about “pakehas” and “Polynesians,” and “atmospheres of soup kitchens,” were derogatory of the staff of the Labour Department and I believe a retraction is in order.—Yours, etc., R. B. LATIMER. November 19, 1981.
