Social Credit policies

Sir,—For some time I have been nonplussed at the gullibility of the public on political matters. In this I refer particularly to the public acceptance of Socred's policies, probably accurately described by .the Prime Minister of the "tooth fairy” type. Here we have an emerging party which professes to be in all manners competent and capable of governing us on a complete range of social and financial areas. Let us look at one aspect of law enforcement and the requirement of the police to prove that admissions and confessions given to the Court have firstly been taken before a solicitor or justice of the peace. Such a nonsensical requirement received no support elsewhere and Mr Beetham told us today on "talk-back” Radio New Zealand that as a result of submissions made to

them by the Police Association, the requirement has now been withdrawn. The fact is that had anyone in Social Credit any skills in this area, such a requirement would not have been there in the first place. It took personal contact, letters to newspapers, questions on talk-back shows by me, and Police Association submissions to make Socred's leader aware of the error of his ways.— Yours, etc.,

R. A. COOK. November 19, 1981
