2000 students seek work
More than 2000 students have registered as unemployed with the Labour Department in Christchurch, but only 547 job offers have been made by potential employers. The Department's district superintendent, Mr W. T. Holland, yesterday appealed to community organisations to offer jobs under the Student Community Service Programme. Under the scheme, community organisations can apply‘to the Labour Department for students to do community work. The department pays the students’ wages and where applicable provides grants for materials used.
Mr Holland said that all applications by employers wishing to take part in the scheme should be made in writing to the Labour Department. Private Bag. Christchurch, or inquiries should be made to Mr J. Toombs at telephone 794-020. The department' is running the programme from the Shelley Common Room at the University of Canterbury, from 9 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. daily. Eligible job-seekers under the programme include secondary school pupils proceeding to fulltime tertiary institutions, full-time teachers’ college students, full-time students of the Drama School or private business colleges, and full-time students of tertiary institutions or community colleges.
