Simpson to play in S.A.
PA Wellington The New Zealand Davis Cup player. Russell Simpson, has rejected the Government’s plea not to play in next week’s $300,000 South African open tournament in Johannesburg. A second New Zealander, the veteran Onnv Parun. said in Wellington yesterday he would have played in the week-long grand prix event if his entry had been acceptable.
Early last month the Minister of Foreign Affairs iMr Talbovs) wrote to both players to explain New Zealand's obligations to tne Gleneagles Agreement and asking them not to play in lhe event. “I am a tennis player, not a politician, I am going to South Africa to play m their grand prix tournament. They obey al! the rules,” Simpson said.
