1000 roses on display

More than 1000 roses will be on display in the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s rose show today and tomorrow. The blooms represented a record entry for the annual show, said the secretary of the society, Mr T. W. B. Clarke. “Our entries are 25 per cent up on last year, with increases in all sections.” he said. The biggest jump was in the rose section and the entries were well up to the usual high standard. The show, which will be open from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow will have several overseas judges.

Mr and Mrs D. F. Marshall. of California, and Mr and Mrs J. Walter, of Texas, who are in New Zealand to judge at the National Rose Show in Auckland, will be judging in the premier classes at the Christchurch show. All blooms in the show will be competing for the Viking Trophy, which was presented by the late Mr C. W. Skellerup, and the Society’s Blue Ribbon for the best exhibition bloom. Among the expected several thousand visitors will be a group of disabled people who will be driven to the show tomorrow by members of various Rotary clubs.
