Win for China
NZPA-Reuter Peking Thousands of young Chinese, skirting a ban on demonstrations in Peking’s central Tienanmen Square, cruised round the square on bicycles to celebrate an important soccer victory. A few scattered firecrackers sounded after China beat Saudi Arabia 2-0 in Kuala Lumpur, boosting its lead in the Asia-Oceania group in qualifying play for the World Cup soccer tournament in Spain next year. The police, spread round
the square and nearby major intersections in small groups, routed some traffic round the area and kept cyclists moving. “Go home, go home,” said officers moving cyclists out of Chang An Avenue in front of Tienanmen, the Gate of Heavenly Peace. Standings in the qualifying group are:
