Customs searches defended

PA Wellington The Minister of Customs (Mr Templeton) yesterday defended customs officials against criticism by United States Antarctic personnel. The Americans had complained in a letter to “The Press” that some of their

Antarctic-bound mail had been “violated” by customs authorities, and that the Government treated them as if they were “certified felons unfettered by scruples.” Mr Templeton said that in the last few months officials had been opening the mail because there was reason to suspect it sometimes contained drugs. “Drugs have indeed been found and the investigations

are continuing. Some of the drugs found had been concealed in other material with the clear intention of throwing sniffer dogs off the scent and, for that reason, it has been necessary to open packages and not merely to put the dogs over them,” Mr Templeton said. The United States Embassy had been fully informed of the investigations, he said.
