The river horse
Hippopotamus — what a strange name. Do you know what it means? It means “river horse.” The closest living relative of the hippopotamus is the pig, though the hippo is much bigger than the pig, or even the horse. A big hippo can be. 3.5 m long and weigh up to. 3.5 tonnes. The hippo has the largest mouth of any mammal, ex-
cept the whale. It has two tusk's in the upper jaw, and four in the lower. It can kill a small animal with a single bite. However, the hippo would rather hide than attack, and it will run to the water to hide. It can run as fast as man. >■ * In water the hippo can drop out of sight like a stone or it can float. The hippo can stay under water for about nine minutes.
