English still top S.C. subject

PA Wellington English, the subject which annually launches the School Certificate examination, continues to hold top place in the candidates’ popularity stakes. Although no longer compulsory for School Certificate, English has this year attracted 53,991, candidates, of the total 75,087. They will sit the threehour paper on November 20. Second in the subject popularity stakes is mathematics, with 39,705 candidates, followed by science (32,785) and geography (27,555). The number of candidates sitting the examination for the first time is 55,502 and

4226 are extra-mural students. The Education Department examination division is preparing to handle 2541 internally assessed marks. Nearly 82,000 short answers will be marked by computer in accordance with past practice. The department said that some subjects, noticeably economic studies, home economics, human biology, Spanish, and workshop technology, showed a marked increase in entries. Thirty-two candidates will sit the examination overseas including the United Kingdom, the United States, Thailand, Guatemala, and the West Caroline Islands.
