Protester sacked

PA Wellington Mr David MacPherson has been dismissed from his job at Chloride Batteries, Gracefield, after his conviction for theft on Friday in the District Court at Low’er Hutt. “We have discharged him", the plant’s manufacturing director, Mr Wayne Arnold, confirmed yesterday. In August about 120 workers at the plant went on strike in support of Mr MacPherson, an Engineers’ Union shop steward, who had been suspended on full pay after his appearance in court

charged with stealing from his employers. The strike lasted for nearly two weeks. Mr Arnold said yesterday that Mr MacPherson had received full pay until his conviction in court on Friday and discharge from the company. The Court had found that Mr McPherson, an antiSpringbok tour protester, took disposable dust masks from his employer for use in a demonstration.

Judge Graham remanded him to November for a probation report and sentence on bail of S5OO.
