Misuse of funds alleged

PA Wellington A Californian fundamental Christian aid group has been accused of misusing money collected from several nations.

International Christian Aid, which has an office in Auckland, is accused in a .letter from the World Council of Churches of using only about 10 per cent of the money it collected in West Germany for refugees in Somalia. Assertions have also been made that it sent chewing gum to refugees in Somalia, purchased aeroplanes unsuitable for aid work, and had kept up to $55 million in a special fund set aside for “hard times.”

The assertions were denied by the New Zealand manager of 1.C.A., Mr Harry Bloemendal, and a member of its international committee now in New Zealand, the Rev. Hayes Lloyd. The allegations made against I.C.A. were sent by the Geneva-based World Council of Churches on June 30. Among the I.C.A.'s patrons is the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon).
