Canal collapse upsets Maoris
PA Tauranga Maori people are upset about damage to the Wairoa River caused by the collapse of the Ruahihi canal. The chairman of the Wairoa Maori Committee. Mr Henry Rahiri, has said that Maoris used the river as a food source and for healing purposes.
“Many generations have relied on the river for fish,” he said.
The fish population of the river had been affected by the collapse.
