Although sofne of the contestants seemed scarcely as high as the net, the stroke-making was uniformly good, and bore evidence of sound coaching and ernest training over the winter months.

Competition was particularly intense in the open boys' singles, which attracted a big field of 66 competitors. Those who had advanced to the third round after yesterday’s matches were:— Jeffrey Brightwell, Mark O'Malley, Jason Alexandre, Michael Fox. Graham Beattie, Michael Mclntyre, Nigel Hale. Tim Howe. Hamish Jamieson. Darryl Clarke, Kelly Tonkin, Pita Brightwell, Mark Elderton, Michael Sutherland, Clayton Young and Mathew Granger. In the 27-strong girls’ open singles contest, those through to the third round are:—

Lani Ratana, Anna Hearn, Kaye Nordstrum. Fleur Howard, Joanna Lake. Joanne Ffitch, Mary-Jane Burke, Karen Mellish.
