Auckland bank robbery

PA Auckland Black Friday was just that for the staff and customers of the Dominion Road branch of the Auckland Savings Bank yesterday when a pis-tol-wielding robber escaped with $5600. Five customers and five staff were in the bank when the robber burst in just after 4.30 p.m. Detective Inspector P. L. Ward said the man gave two paper bags to a teller and told him to fill it with money. The teller's cash drawer was locked. The robber, armed with

what appeared to be an air pistol, gave the bags to the next teller and repeated his demand. When the bags were returned, the robber fled, telling the staff and customers to lie on the floor. It was not certain if the man escaped in a car or on foot, said Mr Ward. As the man left, a staff member slipped out the back door and alerted a worker at Davis Funeral Services next door. The police were called but by the time they arrived the robber had vanished.
