Agreement at works

PA Wellington An interim agreement has been reached at Longburn which will enable killing trials on the one chain to begin on Wednesday, it was announced in a joint statement from the West Coast (North Island) branch of the Meat Workers’ Union and Borthwick-CWS. The chain will incorporate two pelting machines. Other mechanisation and automated systems will be worked in follow-on departments.

Wage rates, conditions, and staffing scales would in all instances be those which applied last season, the statement said. “The sole reason for the late start to the Longburn has been problems in the supply of pelting machines. These will be installed on all chains as they become available and it is hoped that at least three chains will be working before Christmas. “Negotiations for a productivity scheme at Longburn will continue.

"Once agreement has been reached killing capacity will be increased by half a million lambs per season at a capital cost of about $3 million to $4 million. “This compares with the capital cost of a new works of approximately $25 million for a kill of one million lambs. More than 100 new jobs could be created for unemployed people in the district and killing charges to the farmer will be competitive with other works.”

Provisional agreement on all main points was expected early next year, the statement said.
