BILATERAL AID: SOLOMON ISLANDS CONSULTANT BOATYARD MANAGER APPLICATIONS ARE INVITED for the position of Boatyard Manager at the Sasape boatyards at Tulagi in Solomon Islands under the New Zealand Bilateral Aid Programme. The boatyard manager will be responsible to the general manager of National Fisheries Development, Ltd; a joint venture Solomon Islands-Solomon Taiyo Company. The fisheries development project is intended to promtoe skip-jack tuna fishing in Solomon Islands using ten locally constructed ferrocement fishing , vessels. Two at present have been completed and three are at various stages of completion. Of the current expatriate staff, two are provided under New Zealand aid. DUTIES: To co-ordinate the over-all planning and implementation of the boat building programme. (1) To supervise closely the construction process of ferrocement hulls and advise the general manager of all related matters. (2) To train local counterparts to a level where they are capable of managing the ferrocement programme. (3) To supervise the procurement, warehousing, issue of materials, spare parts and gear. (4) To prepare cost estimates and other budgetary information as required to assist the finance and administrative managers in maintaining records. PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE: The appointee will be thoroughly experienced in ferrocement boat construction methods and have previous managerial experience. BILATERAL AID: SOLOMON ISLANDS DRAUGHTING TUTOR REGIONAL SURVEY SCHOOL HONIARA TECHNICAL INSTITUTE The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is seeking applications under New Zealand's bilateral aid programme for a draughting tutor at the Regional Survey Training School, Honiara, Solomon Islands. The Survey Training School was set up in 1976 in response to grave shortages of professional surveyors, survey technicians and draughtsmen in the Pacific region. The purpose of the School is to provide suitable training to enable students, on completion of the course, to carry out all the duties of a survey technician and/or draughtsman with the minimum of supervision. It is now proposed that a one-year draughting course be established in 1982 to dovetail with the present two year survey course. QUALIFICATIONS: The appointee will be required to have the New Zealand Certificate of Draughting (Survey) and several years experience'covering all aspects of survey draughting, basic photogrammetry and cartography. He/she will be expected to develop and teach a curriculum relevant to the requirements of the Pacific region which will enable students to return to their home countries after one year, fully conversant with draughting techniques. The appointee, who will be based in Honiara will be required to begin duties by February Ist, 1982. The appointment will be for two years under terms and conditions applicable to New Zealand Aid Advisers. Housing will be provided and location and child allowances are payable.
