‘Bosses’ and ‘workers’

Sir—This is a favoured land. A trip abroad will confirm this. Recently, the F.O.L. president, Jim Knox, disparagingly referred to the “boss class.” Must we still hear such jaded overtones from Merseyside, Clydeside and East Ham? Alas, all men are not equal, but at least in New Zealand, all are equal in opportunity, unless mentally or physically handicapped, yet still cared for. Here one can rise to the highest post in the country, or be alternatively a layabout. This is election year. Sparks are flying. Let’s not confuse class consciousness with snobbery. The latter is but a human, sometimes amusing weakness, possibly a sign of lack of maturity. One gets tired of hearing about the “workers." Must we tolerate this “worker” and “boss class” talk? My widowed mother brought us up in the depression without a widow’s pension then. She was a real “worker.” So what?—Yours, etc., JOHN LESLIE. November 11, 1981.
