Refuse decision

Sir,—l have been opposed to the Waimairi landfill site from the start. I favour recycling as opposed to open landfill which is basically what is being done at any tip in Christchurch. In this “day and age” where space shuttle Columbia is due for a second reusable flight, surely a bit of household rubbish can be efficently reused, or at least disposed of without even minor pollution to our environment. M. A. and M. D. Johnston I believe are correct in saying Chaneys and Ouruhia residents are not "anxious” about a rubbish dump in their area. The point is, who is? The answer? No one. So the solution must be to compost the refuse as is being sucessfully done in Auckland, and has been done since 1963. That refuse is composted and resold to horticulturists, with the remaining crushed material land-filling low-lying ground.—Yours, etc., ’ DAVE CREEK. November 8, 1981.
