College job ‘guarantee’

PA Rotorua The jobs and functions of staff in teachers’ colleges were guaranteed for the coming year, said the Minister of Education (Mr, Wellington) at Wairakei last evening. He was commenting on a statement by the principal of the Christchurch Teachers’ College, Dr J. F. Mann, who said on Wednesday that some of New Zealand’s teachers’ colleges would close if “savage” trainee quota cuts persisted. “About two colleges could do the job,” he said, in his report to his college council. Mr Wellington, who opened

the annual conference of the Technical Institutes Association, said that no decision had been made on the position of teachers’ colleges. “On the question of accommodation and of how many students there are, no

decision can be made until we have spoken to the people in the colleges,” he said. Mr Wellington said he was looking at the situation “to ensure there was a distribution of training platforms throughout the country.”
