Police catch real burglar
PA Auckland Eight police constables surrounded a fleeing “criminal” at Auckland’s Carlaw Park yesterday — fully expecting him to be one of their fellow policemen. It was part of an exercise in which the “fugitive” policeman was to dump a stolen car and try to elude his chasers. However, the night shift constables got more than they bargained for — they caught a real burglar in the act. The night shift decided to stage the dummy chase in the early hours because it had been such an uneventful night.
They staked out the Rugby League stadium, waiting for their “car thief’ to make his break. After a cold, 20-min-ute wait one constable was ordered by radio to go to the assistance of his colleagues. But instead, he found a burglar, complete with tools, trying to break into a building — and within seconds the man was surrounded. It turned out he was wanted on nine arrest warrants for burglaries in Auckland, Whakatane, and Tauranga. He was questioned in con- ; nection with 28 previous burglaries and was to appear in the District Court at Auckland.
