West wins award
Graeme West, of Taranaki, has been chosen as the recipient of the Steve Watene Trophy as the New Zealand rugby league “player of the year.” Although he led Central to victory in the first two national inter-districts championships, West was a controversial Kiwi selection after
some indifferent performances earlier in his career. However, he showed outstanding form in the secondrow in Britain and France late last year, and was even more prominent in New Zealand’s two decisive test wins over France at Auckland in June.
