England wins first match
NZPA-Reuter Bombay The England cricket team began its tour of India with a 47-run victory over an invitation eleven in a one-day limited-overs charity match at Bombay yesterday. England, fielding a virtual test side, scored 154 for nine off 48 overs and bowled out the Indian Cricket Club President’s Eleven, led by
Sunil Gavaskar, for 107 in 42.2 overs. The medium pacers, lan Botham (2/15); Graham Gooch (3/20) and the spinner Derek Underwood (2/10) between them brought the victory. The touring side’s batting suffered early when the opener, Geoff Boycott, was claimed by the mediumpaced test opener, Kapil Dev,
after scoring only one run with England’s total at 13. Gooch fell shortly afterwards with the score at 27 but Geoff Cook revived England’s fortune with a superb 56, the top score of the match. The Indian batting had little to offer after a secondwicket stand of 21 between Gavaskar and Yajurvindra Singh.
