Trip to Spain assured
NZPA-Reuter London Austria virtually guaranteed itself a trip to the World Cup soccer finals in Spain next year by holding Bulgaria to a goalless draw in its final qualifying tie in Sofia yesterday. To deny the Austrians the second qualifying spot in group one of. the European competition, the Bulgarians face the staggering task of beating West Germany by a
six-goal margin in their final match in Dusseldorf later this month. The hopelessness of their situation can be gauged from the fact that the Germans, already, certain of another appearance in the finals, have not dropped a point in six group matches. While group one appears tied up, the prize of the second qualifying spot in group four will rest on the final match in the section
between England and Hungary, at Wembley next week. Rumania could manage only a goalless draw from its match against Switzerland, in Berne yesterday, leaving England one point away from qualifying for the finals for the first time since 1962. England has only to manage a draw against Hungary to qualify. The Hungarians are already assured of top place in the group.
