Pediatrician acquitted

Sir,—l am disturbed by the news that a British pediatrician has been acquitted of a charge of killing a baby. The practice of killing handicapped babies by administering drugs which destroy appetite is already becoming established in some hospitals in Britain, Canada and the United States. Now it has been given a legal sanction. There is a ruthless and terrible logic which can make infanticide appear reasonable in the eyes of educated people. It is a logic that is unable to draw a line as to the degree of handicap necessary before killing is supposedly justified. Its end is Belsen. Hopefully in New Zealand as yet we do not have to make babies’ lives dependent upon the size of government grants to hospitals such as Templeton.—Yours, etc., G. A. LEICESTER. November 8. 1981.
