Refuse decision

Sir,—Helen Garrett’s attitude is typical of our local authority representatives making statements about the landfill hearings decisions. I can assure her that all people who presented evidence at the hearings for both- sides were thoroughly questioned by the sitting councillors to determine the facts of the case. Being one of these witnesses, in no way can I agree that members of the hearings committee were timid in their approach to the decision. May I suggest that Cr Garrett ring the Waimairi County Council and ask to read all the evidence and taped transcripts, etc., of the hearings and then and only then make statements about the socalled excellent rubbish scheme. Our committee knowsthat she did not attend the town planning hearings, along with 99 per cent of the other councillors.—Yours, etc., S. SCHNEIDER, Chairman, Waimairi Coastal Protection Committee. November 8, 1981. Sir,—Your correspondents, M. A. and M. D. Johnston, should be made quite aware that the North New Brighton Residents’ Association nominated Johns Road and Main North Road, both State highways, as the access routes to the Chaneys landfill, an area of land which is surrounded by

mature trees and isolated from public view. At the landfill town planning hearing the councillors decided that residents’ fears about property devaluation were unfounded and only residents along the Bower Avenue access road and people using the nearby beach for recreation would be affected. As the Chaneys site is not used for recreational purposes, nor will Marshland Road be used for heavy traffic access, I cannot see why M. A. and M. D. Johnston are at all worried.—Yours, etc., D. M. EWEN. November 9. 1981. Sir,—The bulldozing of the proposed rubbish dump in Waimairi County by the Metropolitan Refuse Committee should never have been. To put a rubbish dump (call it a landfill if you like) next to developing areas is not on; put one next to Fendalton and see what would happen. To have rubbish taken from one side of the city to the transfer stations on the other side, and then back again through city streets to the dump, is ridiculous. If this area had not been suitable, the dump would have had to go elsewhere, so try again.— Yours, etc., W. FOOT. November 9. 1981.
