More better wines

A big increase in higher awards was a feature of the national wine competition this year. During two weeks of appraisal the judges awarded a total of 23 gold medals, 182 silver, and 216 bronze from the record entry of 540 wines. About a quarter of the entries were rejected, the same as last year. White wines were bv far

the most successful, especially chardonnays and traminers, but an improved standard was shown in most classes. The competition was notable for entries by several new wine-makers and some of them achieved gratifying results. Lists of awards in the competition are now largely being used by the public as a buying guide.-
