Recycling scheme succeeds
Wellington reporter The Auckland pilot scheme for can recycling has proved so successful that its promoters have doubled the collection scheme. After starting with four collection centres, it now has eight. The scheme was devised by the Auckland steel recycling firm. Pacific Metal Industries, Ltd, to provide raw material for its tin can recycling plant commissioned in mid-1980. The plant separates the tin coating from the steel bodies of the cans,' enabling industrial tin plate offcuts and household can refuse to be recycled for the first time in New Zealand. The plant has the capacity to provide the steel industry in New Zealand with a further 20,000 tonnes of recycled steel a year.
