The economy
Sir,—Mr Muldoon continues to blame increased oil prices for our social and economic ills and repeats that under the circumstances the Government has done well in holding inflation, unemployment, taxes and crime at their present level.
With our present rate of inflation at 16 per cent and zero growth, an O.E.C.D. report shows that from our position of number four in world standard of living 20 years ago, we have now tumbled down among Third World nations into twenty-fourth place. Europe, as a whole, has an inflation rate of 12.6 per cent and an average growth rate of 3 per cent and some Third World countries are also doing better than us, e.g. Taiwan, South Korea, Malaysia and Singapore. Thailand, swamped with. refugees and with a war along its border, has a growth rate of 7 per cent. — Yours, etc., JOHN J. FORSTER. November 7, 1981.
