National Super.

Sir,—Many correspondents, including M. King (November 6), have been knocking 60-65 year-olds who still work and draw super. They deserve it; many have been paying social security tax for up to 45 years without drawing a cent in benefits. For every 60-65-year-old working and on super, three young people draw benefits for self-inflicted pregnancies and injuries. There are jobs available for young people who want them. I suggest the following: (1) Retire married women over 50 whose husbands work. My check on large department stores and 45 offices revealed a possible 1500-2000 jobs could be available; (2) Unions put pressure on organisations not filling positions left by retirements, sharing the work load among other employees; (3) Employers are not advertising vacancies. As one manager said: “If the beggars are too lazy to come looking for a job, they don’t deserve one.” He had work available. — Yours, etc., J. FLOWERS. November 8, 1981.
