Socred man defects
PA Auckland ■A leading Social Credit activist in East Coast Bays has left the league and is
standing as an Independent in this month’s General Election. Mr Eric Smith, aged 55. yesterday confirmed he was standing as an Independent against the Social Credit member, Mr G. T. Knapp. He refused to discuss his leaving the league. “I don’t want to talk about it. I’m looking to the future. I’m not washing dirty ; linen in the papers.” Mr Smith, who stood for Values in the electorate in 1978, would not discuss his plans, but in July he said Social Credit was changing
rapidly into the "poor man’s version" of the National Party.
