$32,000 for Treaty

PA Auckland One of the eight original copies of the Treaty of Waitangi was sold for $32,000 in Auckland yesterday. The copy was the only one not in the National Archives with the original, and its sale was negotiated by an art auctioneer, Mr Peter Webb.

One of the auction bidders was a New Zealander living in Australia, who wanted to

take the document out of the country, but Mr Webb said the Internal Affairs Department would not allow this. It was sold to an Aucklander for his private collection. Described in the catalogue as a “famous and historic manuscript of unusual importance and rarity,” the item was one of eight duplicate copies of the treaty. Before yesterday’s sale, it was part of the Winstone collection.
