Five Cup hopefuls try to quality

From ALLAN BROWN Melbourne All except five of the present Melbourne Cup acceptors will compete at Flemington this afternoon, three of them attempting to make certain a place in the field next Tuesday. The three making late bids for the Cup field are Find The Gold, Waideene and Dealer's Choice, all in the 2500 metres Dalgety Handicap. As it stands the Melbourne Cup field is two over the limit. Find The Gold, Waideene and Dealer's Choice have yet to quality but they would do so by managing one of the first four placings in the Dalgety. Find The Gold, an In The Purple four-year-old trained by Colin Hayes, has more appealing form than either

of the other two and is generally rated a fair prospect. He finished third in his last start, over 2400 metres in the Geelong Cup on October 21 and has looked, at best, a sound stayer. It is doubtful though whether Find The Gold or any of them in the Dalgety will be able to contain Just A Dash, a good young stayer from Tommy Smith’s stable.

Just A. Dash, which won the 3200 metres Adelaide Cup as a three-year-old last season, is on the third line of favouritism for the Melbourne Cup. He was one of the beaten (sixth) last time, in the Caulfield Cup but is expected to be helped to a better showing by the bigger Flemington track. In his only two races at Flemington, both this spring, Just A Dash finished fourth

in the weight-for-age Craiglee Stakes, 1600 metres, and fourth in the 2000 metres Turnbill Stakes. The two hardest for Just A Dash to beat could be Anzaas, a New Zealand-bred six-year-old, by Azemann-At-lantico, and El Laurena, the second and third placegetters respectively in the Moonee Valley Cup last Saturday.

El Laurena ran the 2600 metres of the Moonee Valley race very strongly under 56kg, just failing to catch Saxon Slew. Anzaas was almost in line with the two of them, also battling home gamely.

El Laurena is the topweight in the Dalgety but with just Ikg more than he carried in the Moonee Valley. Anzaas is up a fraction in the handicap, by half a kilogram.
