Survey on business optimism welcomed

PA Wellington The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) has welcomed the Institute of Economic Research survey on business optimism. Mr Muldoon said yesterday that the survey was in line with his own thinking “with the exception that I would not see the recovery as short-term."

“There is every indication of the economy gradually picking up at the present time with a reduction in unemployment." Mr Muldoon said.

“The analysis we had of the growth rate in 1980-81 supports that view. Destocking has ended and the energy industry is picking up under the impact of the Government’s growth strategies.”

Mr Muldoon said this activity should continue to flow on through other areas of the economy.

“The survey also confirms that we will have to watch against getting into a con-sumption-led boom," he said.
