Labour votes with Govt
PA Wellington Labour members took a rare step and voted with the Government on Tuesday evening in a Parliamentary division forced by Social Credit. The motion by Social Credit was defeated by a crushing 53-3. The other member ■- to vote with the Social Credit leader (Mr Beetham) and his deputy, Mr G. T. Knapp, was the mem-;
ber for Nelson, Mr M. F. Courtney (Independent). The move that saw Government and Opposition members filing into- the same voting chamber was a measure sponsored by Mr Beetham that would ensure a member of the Boundaries Commission should be nominated to represent the “unofficial” Ooposition. There are no Social Credit members on the commission.
although the party may make submissions to it. Mr Beetham said during the committal stages of the Electoral Amendment Bill that he would have preferred to have a member of Social Credit on the commission. However, as an extra member would have involved an appropriation of public money, having a nominee to represent the party’s interests was the next best thing.
