Geelong Cup to Allez Bijou
NZPA staff correspondent Sydney
The New Zealand-bred galloper, Allez Bijou, ridden by Gary Willetts, stormed home to win the $20,000 Geelong Cup (2400 m at Geelong, Victoria, yesterday.
In an all-New Zealand finish, Langeiand, which led for most of the race finished second, ahead of find the Gold, ridden by Brent Thomson.
Allez Bijou (Noble BijouTime Lass) went to the line a length and a half clear of Langeland, which was ridden by Bob Skelton.
Find the Gold, trained by Colin Hayes, was half a length behind Langeland whose second would have provided his trainer, Brian Elliott, with some consolation for the Copenhagen II gelding's unplaced run in the Caulfield Cup.
The favourite Arwon started working his way through the field with about 900 m to run and put in a strong challenge but could only finish fourth, ahead of Parrdoo (Skyhawk II—Bandoo) ridden by Brendan Clements, which was fifth.
