Sir.—l take strong exception to the assertion by Mr Hemsley in his letter (October 16) that board members treat the Harbourmaster and pilots with "contempt,” but I fully agree with Mr Hemsley's opinion of our Harbourmaster and pilots. They have an excellent safety record of bringing tankers of all sizes into the oil wharf over more years than I can remember. Let me assure Mr Hemsley-that the board has no intention of allowing any unsafe practices in handling L.P.G.—Yours, etc., J. E. MANNERING, Chairman, Lyttelton Harbour Board. October 16, 1981.
