Japanese Haiku
These poems were written by pupils of Little Akaloa School, on Banks Peninsula. They are very clever, as they are based on the short Japanese Haiku, which is a three-lined, 17syllable poem. The first line contains five syllables, the second seven syllables, and the third line five syllables.
Wind rages above Treacherous weather today Disturbing people. — CATHERINE BRADLEY, aged 10.
Storms growl around land Destructing our earth again Toppling trees die. - ANDREW CRAW, aged 11
Wind strongly pulling Grass up with all trees lying Swaving side to side. — CRAIG WAGHORN, aged 12
The sea sweeps to shore Crashing against sharp rocks A stormv dav blows. — JOHN CRAW, aged 10.
Wind strong and freezing It is cruel but calm I like the wind now. — PIP WAGHORN, aged 10.
Thundering crashing Lightening rain falls on us Winds howling around. — JANE CRAW, aged 10.
Wind wind dying down Show me how you can do it If vou can’t I don't mind. - MARK HARRIS, aged 8.
