Volcanoes

Did you know that two volcanoes, which erupted about 12 million years ago, formed Banks Peninsula? The main centre of the eruption, at Quail Island, continued for two million years.

Alternative layers of . ash and lava built up the Lyttelton cone which may have been as high as 1700 m, with a radius of 12km. The ash was baked into a brick-coloured rock by the molten lava, which itself cooled into a hard, grey rock. The sea eventually broke through the crater wall at the top of the Lyttelton cone,

and thus. Lyttelton Harbour was formed.

The Akaroa volcano erupted later than Lyttelton — about nine million years ago. This eruption continued for about one million years, and built up a cone even mightier than its neighbour.

The main centre of the eruption was on Onawe Peninsula. The cone was 1800 mm high with a radius of 18km. Some of the lava from the Akaroa eruption even spilled over into the Lyttelton crater forming the long spur which runs towards Charteris Bay.
