Council accepts works depot tender
A $624,810 tender from M, L. Paynter, Ltd, for the construction of offices and staff amenities at the Sydenham central works depot was accepted by the Christchurch City'Council last evening. It was the lowestof. 10 tenders, ranging to $681,703. The City Council’s latest esti-mate-had been $665,000. Construction will take about a year after a permit is granted, and will be financed from the council’s yard and depot renewal fund. It is part of the third stage of depot development between Milton Street and Sydenham Park. When the project is completed, the council will be able to close the old depot at the corner of Montreal Street and Moorhouse Avenue, and dispose of the property. Creche taken Councillors accepted a tender for the construction of a Queen Eliabeth II Park creche of $62,900 from Mitchell and Jeffries, Ltd. they decided to site the creche building west of the entrance drive , from Travis Road. : . The successful tender was
the lowest of seven, ranging to $86,235, and was below the latest council estimate of $66,000 for . the job. ■. Some additional costs for extending stormwater, water and electrical services will result from the siting decision. A site earlier proposed had been on. more level ground near the old grandstand. Parking sites Additional car-parking sites near the City Mall in Cashel and High Streets are being negotiated by the council to compensate for onstreet parking lost when the new mall is completed early next year. < The council wants to increase the number, of offstreet spaces to about 700 at the mall’s west end in the next five years. In .the long term, another 500 spaces could be provided in a retail and commercial parking . complex near the mall. Details of land transactions were considered in committee. Signals The council will install traffic signals at the inter-
section of Stanmore Road and North Avon Road, and place special paving and plants nearby to discourage through traffic from using Stapletons Road. • "
The service station owner at the Stapletons Road intersection with North ; Avon Road has argued that the road changes could affect his business. ’ . Councillors said the changes — which will narrow the Stapletons Road exit but still allow traffic to enter and leave the street — could enhance the area with asso-"' ciated landscaping, making the station more attractive to passing motorists. They said the street would not be stopped, and the planting would not “unduly •impede” traffic using Stapletons Road. Representation The Local Government Commission will decide the issue of how Canterbury United Council financing should be determined. Although the City Council has argued that the regional body should not be funded on a population basis alone, that stand has not been supported by other United Council members. Last evening, city councillors referred the issue to the commission. Hit-and-run The police are seeking witnesses to a fatal hit-and-run accident on Friday just before midnight near the Christchurch Women’s Hospital in Colombo Street. A cyclist, Melville Frank Miller, aged 60, was killed when he was hit by a car. The police want to hear from anyone who saw a yellow Honda Civic travelling north along Colombo Street about 11.35 p.m.
