Govt nod for Mr Walton

PA Wellington The Government yesterday reaffirmed that it wants the Commissioner of Police, Mr R. J. Walton, to continue in his post for a further two years. Mr Walton has still to tell the Government if he is prepared to delay his retirement. But the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) said yesterday that Cabinet had turned down a request from the Police Officers’ Guild to

withdraw the plan to extend Mr Walton’s term. “We have reconsidered it and "the offer stands,” Mr Muldoon said. “We believe that what is proposed is in the best interests, long-term, of the police force at the present time.” Mr Muldoon said he hoped it would not be too long before Mr Walton notified the Government of his decision, but pointed out that the Commissioner was at present on the royal tour.
