Fence plans scrapped
Plans by the Christchurch City Council to build a clifftop' safety fence at Scarborough were abandoned last evening. Local residents had complained that such a fence would spoil the view from Whitewash Head, and was not needed. Councillors said the posts already there would be removed, along with track markers at the cliff edge. A walking track' would be formed along the walk’s entire length, with warning signs at each end and at intervals along it.
Councillors met residents at the site last week to discuss safety and aesthetic concerns. The formed walking track will be a safe distance from the cliff edge. “We should also make it clear that it is a dangerous place for school parties to visit," said Cr A. J. Graham. . “For young people to be in that area without adults is very unwise indeed,” said the chairman of the parks and recreation committee (Cr Noala Massey).
