Tribunals may be changed
Parliamentary reporter
Policy changes affecting the working of Small Claims Tribunals should be looked at some time next year, says the Minister of Justice (Mr McLay). A research paper studying the establishment and running of the tribunals in New Zealand had concluded that the aim of a scheme oriented towards consumers was being met, Mr McLav said.
The freedom from legal rules, exclusion of advocates, the duty placed on court officers to help, and the determination to scrutinise claims to prevent simple debt-collecting, were all of particular significance.
But the present scheme would continue until there was a wider geographic coverage provided by the tribunals.
Another four tribunals would be established this year, Mr McLay said.
